If you live in an apartment building, do you know if the building has fire escape stairs, and are they still in good shape? If you don't think that they look like they would hold your weight or the weight of several people, you might want to go to your apartment manager and tell him to get a hold of the landlord to have him come and look at them.
These stairs are there for you to use in case of a fire, but if they won't hold a lot of people who might use them to escape a fire, then they need to be replaced or fixed. In a high-rise apartment, these would make the difference of you making it out or losing your life. It is also a good idea to have a back up plan in mind in case these stairs can't be reached.
