Floods are one of the most destructive natural disasters in the United States as shown in statistics record. According to statistics, floods account for 90% of all calamities causing the government to spend around $4 billion dollars every year to cover the damages. Therefore, it is important to know the prevention for possible flood damage. Flood damage prevention can help not only yourself, your family and loved ones, but also the structure of your dwellings as well.

It is important to know first your area before ensuring some simple flood damage protection measures. And so, if your area does not fall within flood risk zone, damage will only be minimal and this poses no need to undergo renovation for your house. This also means that you can handle the clean up by yourself, without the aid of a flood damage professional. More serious problems come to areas which fall on a flood risk zone however. If your home belongs to one, it is important for you to learn about more severe measures to prevent flood damage. There are several agencies in which you can contact in order for you to know what the risks in your area are like the Red Cross Chapter, planning or zoning department, the local National Weather Service office or the emergency management office. These agencies could help you and could give you tips on preventing flood damage.

Applying for flood insurance is also another way of protecting not only your dwelling but most importantly, your family. The best way is to apply for flood insurance the soonest time possible. Do not wait for another flood to come before you are going to apply. Do not waste time; it is much better to be prepared. Also, keep in mind that there is 30-day waiting period for flood insurance.

As soon as you have your flood insurance in your hand, make many copies of those papers and some important documents, then keep these in a safe place. Place these documents in a safe box such as waterproof box so it can not be damaged by flood. Take note that these documents can easily be damaged and so it must be kept safely.

It is best to always be on the alert for potential floods. Local news always gives an update or development for any foreseeable calamities in your area so never fail to stay tuned in. Be prepared for an evacuation anytime, and keep necessary emergency tools handy. When in the process of evacuating your area, avoid driving through flooded areas. You might get stuck, or worse, get swept away by floodwaters.

But of course not all preventive measures can be done alone. You need to seek aid from flood damage personnel. Other preventive actions like raising your furniture and appliances above projected flood level, or installing backflow valves to prevent sewage backup can be done before a flood hits.

These are many preventive measures when possible flood may affect our area. By keeping these things in mind, flood damage won't be hard to handle at all.
