Home invasion is increasing across the United States. It is imperative to protect your family any way you can.

Over the last two weeks I have seen on the news a half a dozen reports on home invasions. This seems to be the crime of choice these days probably due to the luxurious home goods that people are investing in today.

It wasn't just a few years ago that the term "home invasion" was rarely heard and no one ever thought that they were at risk. The sad truth is that it is definitely becoming a more popular word and an even more popular act and as you may or may not know, most home invasions or burglaries happen when the occupants are away from the home.

With a home invasion, the possibility of a confrontation is definitely a possibility and the odds of injury or death to the occupants of the property are on the rise since a burglar usually comes armed with a weapon of some sort. That's what is so scary about these crimes, if you happen to be a victim of a home invasion you have the possibility of assault, injury, rape, or even death to you and/or a member of you family.

Whether or not you believe it, 85% or all home invasions are preventable according to experts. Of all crimes committed each year, 1/6 was a home invasion. Another stunning statistic, a burglary happens every 15 seconds across the US and the average burglar will spend no more than two minutes trying to break an entering and get into your home. If you can find some way to keep burglars out of your home for two minutes, your chances are pretty good that they will move on and target another home.

Get this, most home invasions happen right through the front door, not the back door, the front. Either the occupants of the home open the door or the door is forced open by an intruder. I'll bet that you are you one of those trusting individuals who answer the doorbell or a knock at the door without any hesitation. Don't you realize that once you open the door an inch or two it doesn't take much to force it open all the way?

Make sure that you have a peephole or some other way of checking who is at the door before you open it. You should also make sure that you have a very good deadbolt and solid hardwood doors. You should also have at least two to four locations around the house where you keep non lethal self defense weapons like pepper spray or a taser. You should definitely have one of these locations be at the door you open most.
You should always remember that the more obstacles you can put in an intruders way, the safer your home will be. For sure keep your front door locked and don't open it until you know who it is. This will keep you and your family safe and protected from unwanted intruders.
