While a nursery is typically all about baby, all new moms know that they spend just about as much time in there as the baby does. That is why instead of focusing solely on the child when decorating the nursery, it is a good idea to think also about mom. By providing mother with the things that she needs to take care of herself in the nursery, you cut down on frustration and stress and build up mom's sense of comfort. If you are ready to incorporate mom's needs into the nursery, here are some great tips to help you get started.
Furniture
A nursery needs a crib, changing table and dresser to accommodate baby. For mom, an extremely comfortable chair and footstool are also key. Even if the nursery is small, by having a comfortable chair where mom can sit and relax while feeding the baby, you will have both a happier child and mother. Most people usually think that the chair needs to be a rocker. While a rocking chair is a great addition, the chair does not have to be a rocker. A plush, comfortable arm chair with a footstool that is at the perfect height is also a great choice. Rocking recliners are also ideal, because they combine the gentle motion of the rocker with the benefit of being able to recline. Placing a small side table and lamp next to the chair is also a must.
Fabrics
Durable, soft fabrics are the only way
to go when selecting the perfect pieces for a nursery. If you can find organic cottons that are the right color and size that you need, choose them. Stain resistant or dark fabrics that can hide spills and marks are also a great idea. Patterns are also ideal, because they are more forgiving of things that may get on them in a nursery setting. Silks, damasks and other fragile materials are best left for other rooms in the house, as they will not stand up well to nursery use.
Accessories
Baby has plenty of accessories that need to go in the nursery. Everything from a diaper wipes warmer to a musical night light can be found in today's nurseries. For mom, though, there are some essentials that belong in the nursery just as much as the baby's things. On the small table next to the comfortable chair for mom, should be a box of soft tissues, a covered pitcher of clean, fresh water, and an illuminated clock. Pillows for both propping mom's arm and head should also be plentiful. If mom enjoys reading, a pocket that hangs over the arm of the chair to hold her book is also a must. A book light is great idea to keep in the pocket, as well.
Designing a nursery with both mother and baby in mind is not difficult to do, but it does take some planning. Think about the little, basic needs that often get overlooked as mom is carrying for baby, and provide them for her in the nursery. After all, a comfortable, well rested mom makes for a happy family.
