Goatskin rugs are exceptional soft and fluffy. If you have a hardwearing synthetic carpets, wood floors or tiles then a beautiful goatskin rug will bring additional warmth and comfort to your rooms and ensure your home is as welcoming as possible. Goatskin rugs are made both lined and unlined and each hide is unique which creates a very informal, cosy look for both modern and more traditional homes.

Around the Home

Goatskin rugs are very soft and silky and are ideal for those areas where you want a little more luxury such as bedrooms. Because the hairs are fine and long they can get flattened down and worn with excessive use so it is best not to place them in hallways or living rooms. You should also avoid putting these beautiful rugs in bathrooms as the damp, humid conditions can damage the hides. The majority of goatskin rugs will be whole hide items measuring around 2 x 3 feet. These are useful for creating accents in home design and you can get larger rugs that are cut and sewn from individual hides. Goatskin rugs can also be hung on the walls or draped over furniture or beds. Goatskin rugs are typically thinner than sheepskin or cowhide rugs so it is a good idea to choose the lined versions for that additional touch of softness and luxury. Choose high quality, top grade goatskin rugs as these will last longer and be less prone to sheddin
g than the cheaper versions.

Caring for Goatskin Rugs

Goatskin rugs will last a long time if looked after correctly. It is quite easy to care for goatskin rugs and you can treat them in very much the same way as sheepskin or cowhide rugs. Make sure you turn the rug around now and again to create a more even wear. It is important to remember not to get goatskin rugs too wet as this can serious affect the quality and appearance of the hide. If you need to clean the rug then you should just sponge it with some warm water and a mild detergent. Don’t use any conventional carpet cleaning detergents on these rugs as they will be far too harsh and will damage the hairs and hide backing. Goatskin rugs can be treated with ‘Scotch Guard’ without affecting the overall appearance and this is a good way of protecting them against stains and making sure they last as long as possible.

If your goatskin rug gets creased or curls up then you can use a conventional iron to carefully return it to shape. It is important you do not directly iron the rug as the intense heat will damage the hairs. Instead you will need to place a clean tea towel over the area of the rug you wish to flatten out and then put your iron on a gentle steam setting. Hold the iron in place over the towel and rug (don’t press backwards and forwards) and carefully let the steam do its work. You may need to repeat this a few times until the hide has returned to the correct shape again.
