With some legwork and planning, your tiny loft can be transformed into an inviting and cozy nook. Whether the loft is open and looks down on a lower floor, or is closed, there are different ways that you can use the loft space that your family will really enjoy.
Preparation
Planning the use of your loft space is dependent upon where the loft is located at inside your home. If the loft looks down upon a room in the house that is used often, like the family room or kitchen, you likely want to be sure that your cozy nook in the loft doesn’t become a noise distraction that makes it hard for the family to enjoy the main living area. There are quite a few possibilities for the loft space, however, that aren’t that noisy and that can make the loft a functional space after all. The following loft projects will add additional living space to the home.
A Place for Reading
A reading area is a great option for unused loft space. You won’t need a great deal or furniture or space to create a reading area; just a comfortable sofa or chair, ottoman or foot stool, end table, book case, and reading lamp. Bring in your favorite titles, a soft quilt or blanket to snuggle under, and maybe an electric warmer that will keep your tea or coffee warm as you read – and you’re set for hours of adventure. You might also consider adding a CD player and headphone set for times when you prefer to listen to music instead of reading.
A Place for Playing
Turning the loft into a gaming room is also a popular choice
. Keep in mind, however, that if the loft looks down on the living area of the home, or other popular main living areas, you might want to ask all gamers to use headphones when playing in the loft. An unobtrusive entertainment center, TV, and game system alongside some floor pillows, bean bags, or chairs is all that you need to turn this into a gaming spot for your home. Be sure to bring in a few baskets for storing games, headphones, and game gear. This gets the kids out of the way while giving them a great and somewhat private place to play their video games.
A Place for Hobbies
If you or someone in the home is a hobbyist, then bringing the mess of the hobby out of the living area of the home and into the loft might do a world of good for everyone involved. For instance, if you are a scrap-booker, you might turn the loft into the ideal place for working on your scrapbooks. You’ll only need a good table to work from, adequate lighting, and storage for your supplies. No matter what your hobby, if you have a designated area in the home from which to work, you will enjoy your hobby more, and as a bonus, your family will stop complaining that your “stuff” is all over the house!
A Place for Kids
If the noise being made overhead doesn’t concern you at all, then the loft is a great place for a playhouse. Outfit the area with play kitchen accessories, building blocks, or whatever toys interest your child the most. This is a perfect spot for toys that always seem to be in the way. Kids will really love the feeling of having their own retreat and play area, and you’ll enjoy the more orderly way in which their toys are stored – out from underfoot.
