When looking to select the right faucet for your bathroom or kitchen sink, there are a variety of things to consider such as type, style, installation, and price. Faucet designs range from simple and functional to modern and elegant, meaning there’s a proper unit for any décor. There are special features such as anti-scald protection for children, adjustable flow rate for conserving water, and filtration systems for cleaner drinking water. A basic point to keep in mind when begging the search is that there are four different types of faucets, categorized by the parts that make them function. Each design delivers water through the use of a disc, a ball, a cartridge, or the use of compression.
The compression faucet is the oldest design and the only design to use a washer. Water pressure can be felt when turning the knobs on and off. Although the washers will eventually begin to wear and leak, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. The ball faucet functions via a rotating ball inside its assembly that controls the flow of water as the handle is rotated. Consider that this type is only available in single handle. The disc faucet houses an upper and lower disc. They slide over one another to mix the hot and cold water. The prices are higher when choosing a disc faucet but maintenance is rarely required and both single and double handed styles are available. The cartridge faucet uses a movable cartridge to regulate the flow of water. The single handle style operates up/down for water pressure and right/left f
or water temperature. This style is also available with a double handle. For better performance the ball, disc, and cartridge faucets are all better options.
The next step is to decide on a style that best suits the aesthetic sense of your bathroom. Whether or not the faucet is going to be single-set, center-set (the most widely used style), widespread, or mini spread needs to be determined. This is done by figuring out the design and size of the sink and if there is a configuration of pre-drilled holes. However, if the new faucet style of choice does not require all of the pre-drilled holes, they can be covered by metal plates from the hardware store. If looking to add to a unique look, consider a wall mounted faucet.
When it comes to the finish, the most popular choices are chrome, stainless steel, gold plate brass, and nickel. Most finishes will not tarnish or corrode and are guaranteed by the manufacturer but check before purchasing, this can sometimes be a problem with some of the cheaper models. The average price for a 4” center-set in chrome is $70 -$80, but can be as economical as $30. Getting a decent, simple design without many special features is not hard. Stainless steel and gold plate hold up well over time but tend to be more expensive, the average choice running between $100 - $400. Keep in mind that prices are variable, and it is important to choose a faucet that is functional, attractive, and affordable. The most expensive faucet is not necessarily the best option; nor is the cheapest model always the way to go. Many widespread styles tend to be more expensive but have a variety of mounting and placement choices.
