One fact of life is that accidents happen in the home. In the United Kingdom, roughly around 3 million home accidents happen every year. There are no ways of stopping them. All we can do is minimise their occurrence. Not only are they dangerous to the health of the people in the house, but home accidents can cost you money for medical treatment. Sometimes, home accidents cause death and of course we do not want that happening in our own homes. Therefore, we must do all we can for us to minimise their happening and hopefully avoid them.

Here are some ways how to minimise home accidents:

1.In order to reduce the peril of household fires and the lethal carbon monoxide poisoning, have all your gas and fuel heating apparatuses checked and serviced by a professional at least once a year. It is also suggested to have functioning smoke alarms installed in your home.

2.In your showers and toilet seats, you should put hand rails. Also in the bath tub, have non-slip mats to prevent slipping, which is an accident that often happens due to the wet surface.

3.Another thing to keep in mind is to always have the house well-lit. Some home accidents happen because the house is too dim that a person bumps into objects or slips because he or she did not see the object In front of him or her.

4.If you have children in the house, another way of minimising home accidents is by storing medicines and other chemical substances
away from their reach. You should place these things in a secure and high place that they cannot reach.

5.When you have to stand in a chair or use ladders, never do it alone. Falling in these cases is a common home accident. Have someone hold the ladder or chair so there is some support. But generally avoid placing things in the house that you cannot get hold of.

6.Several home accidents occur because of objects like children’s toys scattered all over the floor. So make it a habit to keep the hallways of your home clear from all the clutter. In that way, no one accidentally trips and hurts any part of his or her body.

7.When cooking food, it is a must to always stay in the kitchen. This is to ensure that if something goes wrong with the stove, you are there to immediately remedy the problem.

8.Before heading to bed, also make it a habit to turn off all the appliances in the house. Make sure to unplug them as well just to be safe.

9.If you are a smoker, do not smoke inside your own house. Some home accidents like fires occur because of cigarettes not properly disposed.

10.Never perform any demanding activity when you are intoxicated with alcohol or medicated with sedatives. You may accidentally hurt yourself in these instances. Have someone assist you to bed or to a couch in these situations.

Home accidents happen not just in the United Kingdom but in different parts of the world. It is something that we have to deal with in our lifetimes. But what we must do is minimise them from happening.
